“Where are we going?”

No answer.

“How long until we arrive.”

Still no response.

“I swear, I’ll start asking ‘Are we there yet?’ every five seconds.”

They must not care about his threat.

“I know you guys can hear me. Dammit, pay attention to me!”

Xak sighed and decided to shut up again. He’d been trying to start conversations with the two winged women several times already, and every time, he was ignored like he wasn’t there. Or more like he was a thing rather than a person. One thing he had noticed was that Ira, the small younger sister, kept stealing glances back at him as she flew ahead. But every time he tried to talk to her, or make eye contact, she would look back ahead quickly, and zip closer to her sister.

Finally, the older sister, Lucy, came to a stop. “Kran! Get your lazy butt out here! Ira and me need your help.” She yelled up at the trees.

From a knot in one of the trees, a small figure flew down. Another of those winged women came to a stop floating above them all. She was the same size as Ira, but looked older than Lucy. “Oh! If it isn’t my two favorite rain fairies, what’s this you have for me? You brought me a gift? I prefer nekos, but he looks good. Much too big though. Wasn’t it a pain dragging him here with him that big?”

“What? Fairies? Is that what you winged people are?” Xak ventured, more to himself. Regardless, Lucy continued as if he hadn’t spoken.

“That’s what we brought him to you for. I promised my sister that she could have him already, but for some reason we can’t shrink him. Neither my nor Ira’s magic seems to affect him.”

“Shrink? As in, to make smaller? That’s possible?” Xak guessed that was what they were trying to back when he met them.

“And so you thought I could do it for you. Well you came to the right fairy. If I can’t shrink him, no one can.” She grins and cracks her knuckles.

“Heywaitaminute!” Xak protest vainly.

Kran gestures wildly and mumbles some arcane words. A bluish mist forms around Xak and coalesces around him. In seconds, he is completely obscured by shifting, blue mist. After a few more seconds the mist dissipated revealing,

“Im- Impossible!” Kran gasped. Xak stood there, shivering slightly, now as nude as the fairies. He quickly shielded himself.

Lucy raised an eyebrow, “That spell seemed a bit elaborate to have just undressed him.”

Kran glared at her. “Silly girl, look at his feet.” She gestured down at the ground, where the grass had shrunk considerably. Small torn pieces of cloth were scattered about the ground as well, the remains of his clothes. “You and your sister are quite good at your magic. I’ve taught you both well. So when you say you can’t shrink a human, I assumed he was fairly magic resistant. So I used my most powerful shrinking spell, and it still had no effect. This human must be immensely resistant to magic.”

“Stop talking like I’m not here” Xak suddenly yells. The three fairies look at him. Ira zips into her sister’s hair at the outburst and watches from there. “Just what’s going on? What do you want with me? Why would you want to shrink me? And,” He lowers his voice humbly, his outburst startling himself as well, “could I get some clothes please?” Kran waves a hand lazily and Xak is clothed again.

“Once we shrink you, we can carry you back up to your home.” Lucy lied smoothly.

“So you were listening to me,” Xak said, surprised.

“Carry him back home? Wouldn’t you rather ea-” Lucy quickly puts a finger over Kran’s mouth to silence her.

“Now, Xak wasn’t it? Go wait over there while I talk with Kran on how to… help you. Ira, go with him.” Lucy commands.

Xak pouts and walks to the tree that Lucy pointed to. Ira reluctantly left the safety and comfort of Lucy’s hair and follows. Xak sighs and takes a seat. Ira floats just out of reach and eyes the human nervously. Xak glances up at her and she turns red and looks away.

Xak decides to try to talk to the little fairy. “So, uh, Ira.” She looks cautiously at him; a bit surprised he remembered her name. “How come you and your sister kept ignoring me?”

“My big sis says never to talk with my food. She says that they’ll say pretty lines, and woo you, take what they want, and then leave you.” Ira says shyly.

“Your food?” Xak asked, wondering if he heard right.

“Ah! I meant to say, humans. Not food,” She turns red again and hides her face in her hands.

“No problem. Just a slip of the tongue, I’m sure. But how come you kept looking at me on the way here?” Xak asked evenly.

If possible, Ira seemed to get more flustered. “Well, ah. Um. That’s because. That’s because you’re different. I’m always able to shrink my foo- ah, I mean humans. And yet I couldn’t with you. And neither could my sister, or aunty Kran. There is something about you that’s fascinating.” Without realizing it, she had been floating a little closer to Xak. “And the story you said as we walked. That you’re from the spire. And you fell, and survived? It’s astounding.”

“So that kind of thing hasn’t happened before?”

“Never! Usually we have to fly up there ourselves to get a-” She suddenly stops, having almost said too much.

Luckily, Xak didn’t seem to notice. “So, just what is this place anyway?”

“Oh! I forgot you didn’t know that. You’re in the Fairy Kingdom in Felarya. More specifically, you’re in Spire’s Shadow.”

“Felarya huh… So how close are we to the edge of Felarya?”

“Edge?”

“Yeah. Is there another world under this one? Maybe with another race there?”

Ira couldn’t help but giggle, “No silly! Felarya is round, like a ball. And there are hundreds of different races found all over!”

Xak started, “What? Round? No, the ground is flat see? If it were round, we’d all slide off.”

“What? No, Felarya is a magical world, especially in the soil, and the power of all it’s magic draws everything towards it. That’s why, even when you’re on the bottom of the world, you think you’re right side up.”

“Wow. You are really smart.”

Ira blushed again. “Lucy taught me everything I know.”

“Even still, you must be a terrific learner.”

“Well…” She rubs the back of her head sheepishly and is about to reply when.
“Ira!”

The diminutive fairy looked up sharply at her sister’s call. Immediately, she flies up to hover above Lucy’s shoulder. Kran wasn’t anywhere to be seen. The two converse with each other for a while. They both seem like they are upset about something. Finally the two finish discussing about whatever and they regroup with Xak.

Lucy speaks up first, “The only way we’ll be able to get you where you belong is if we get a certain nectar that will allow magic to affect you for a short time. The plant is called Elori, and it’s rather rare. I don’t know if we’d find it just by looking, especially because Kran tells me it’s especially rare around here. But east of here, there is a fairy named Temi who is a skilled healer. She has a collection of Elori nectar, and knows where to find it as well. However, she doesn’t stay in just one place, she flies about visiting friends all the time. Fairies are just fickle like that. So you’ll have to go and find her. My sister and I were going to accompany you, but my sister convinced me otherwise. I’ll stay here, and you go with Ira. Now you take care of her, understand? If anything happens to my little sister, I’ll know, and I’ll find you.” Lucy glared at Xak. “And Ira, remember everything I taught you. And don’t let this human out of your sight. Good luck you two.” With that, Lucy turns and flies up into the trees.

Xak and Ira look at each other for a few moments. “So uh, I guess we should get going.” Xak shrugs. Nothing has seemed to make much sense since he’s arrived in Felarya.
The continuing adventures of Xak Cumulus. Or should I say, the beginning of his adventures. I hope it doesn't seem rushed in parts, but I was rather eager to move on. Much more fun things are to happen soon!

But hey, plot advancement! And fairy logic. :D And now I can make bios for Ira and Xak too.
